Mahi mahi is one of the two types of common dolphinfish with a peculiar appearance. The other type of common dolphinfish is Pompano fish or C. equiselis.

It has a distinct ray-finned appearance and is mostly found in off-shore tropical and subtropical water regions around the world. Mahi mahi is also distinguished by its unique blend of glowing scales color.

However, most of the Mahi mahi fishes that are used in traditional dishes come from the coast of East Asian countries, Taiwan and Japan.

In Hawaii where Mahi mahi is most widely used, the name loosely translates to “strong strong.” This is primarily because they are an excellent swimmer and powerful in their natural aquatic environment.

Most people, at least during their first trial, are often skeptical about trying mahi mahi. This is primarily because they are classified under “Dolphinfish” category in aquatic nomenclature. However, it is crucial to note that mahi mahi are NOT minutely related to dolphins. Hence, the taste of mahi mahi is completely the polar opposite of what Dolphins (may) taste like.

Mahi mahi has a distinct sweet and moderately mild flavor with a fairly firm texture. The genuine taste of mahi mahi closely resembles a swordfish, but with a milder taste. Mahi mahi also has characteristic large and moist flakes.

Mahi mahi also has a strong taste profile when compared to other fishes such as Cod. They also have a thick skin, so it is always advisable to remove it before cooking. Mahi mahi taste also has a subtle hint of crawfish, primarily because they feed off them their entire life-cycle.

The darker portions of the meat can also be trimmed away for obtaining a milder flavor.

Ultimately, the taste of mahi mahi will depend largely on your method of cooking (boiled, grilled, or baked) and your personal recipes as well.
