Shelf Life Guide: How Long Does Cottage Cheese Last?

Cottage cheese is a product of cheese curd which is obtained from curdling milk by removing the whey.

It is considered as a ‘super-food’ because it is highly nutritious, rich in protein and exceptionally delicious (souce).

It is similar to cream cheese but is lower in fats, carbohydrates and calories and it is no wonder why vegetarians and weight-watchers turns to cottage cheese to substitute meat as it is a much healthier option.

As a fun fact, Richard Nixon was a fan of cottage cheese calling it his staple food. It is no wonder that his last meal was a bowl of cottage cheese with a slice of pineapple.

Just like brie cheese, cottage cheese does not have a long shelf-life. Cottage cheese has to be continually refrigerated even when it is not opened.

Once the pack of the cottage cheese has been opened, the cottage cheese will have a shelf-life of 7 to 10 days at a maximum, provided that it is kept in a refrigerator the whole time.

It is also advisable to keep the cottage cheese in its original packaging or an air-tight container once it is opened and to keep it in the fridge to maximize its shelf-life.

If you have bought a large supply of cottage cheese, you could freeze it until you thaw it for consumption. But there is one thing to be clear of, the cottage cheese will not be fresh-tasting and it would be bland.

Being able to tell whether the cottage cheese has spoiled or not is hardly rocket science because we know that, milk products have a peculiar smell when they turn.

Once the cottage cheese gets spoiled, it will have a tangy smell which will just not feel right. When you have your reservations about it not smelling right, the next step is to simply discard the product.

Cottage cheese also develops a moldy layer on top once it becomes bad. If the layer of the cottage cheese appears greenish to pinkish, then that’s the time for the cottage cheese to make a trip to the bin.

If you weren’t able to catch the smell, and the appearance of the cottage cheese seemed all right, you would still notice when you taste the cottage cheese. It would taste sour which is not at all how it should taste like.
