Cocoa powder does not really go bad, but there is certainly a limit on how long it can stay in your pantry. As in, it does not spoil in general, but cocoa powder can lose its flavoring and potency over time, especially if it is used beyond its ‘best before’ date.
Cocoa powder naturally has a shelf life of at least two to three years which can extend beyond its expiration date. But for that, the can or the container should be unopened.
Once you open the can or the container of the cocoa powder, the product should be used within a year. The quality of the cocoa powder will decline with every passing day once it is out of its sealed pack.
In unlike cases, if the cocoa powder is stored under the wrong conditions, there are chances that mold will grow on it on the product. So, it is important to keep the cocoa container in a sealed container and in a dry area.
How to Tell If Cocoa Powder Is Bad?
The best way to determine if cocoa has gone bad is to simply have a look. If it is spotting a moist look, it means that it has definitely gone bad. If there is also a moldy appearance on the surface, it means that your cocoa powder should head straight to the bin.
If the appearance is all right, but you still want to make sure if it is still right, you can taste it. If you cannot taste any chocolaty flavor, it means that the cocoa powder has lost its potency.
Finally, if you are getting some sort of unpleasant odor from the cocoa powder, there is no second guessing that the cocoa powder has turned rancid.
